ER vs Urgent Care

ER vs. Urgent Care: Which Should You Go To?

Choosing between an ER and an urgent care center can be confusing — and getting it wrong can mean delays, higher bills, or worse outcomes. Here's a clear guide to choosing the right level of care.

ER vs. Urgent Care: Which Should You Go To?

What an urgent care center can handle

Urgent care is built for things that need same-day attention but aren't life-threatening: minor cuts needing stitches, simple sprains, mild fevers in adults, sinus infections, UTIs without complications, and routine flu testing.

What requires an ER

Chest pain, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, head injuries, severe bleeding, possible strokes, broken bones with deformity, severe allergic reactions, high fevers in infants, pregnancy complications, and any symptom that feels life-threatening — all need an ER.

The freestanding ER advantage

Freestanding ERs like ours offer hospital-level emergency care without the long hospital ER waits. We have CT, ultrasound, full labs, IV medications and board-certified ER physicians — but typically see patients within minutes.

Cost considerations

ER visits cost more than urgent care, but the right care at the right time is what matters. For true emergencies, ER cost is moot — for routine illness, urgent care is appropriate.

When in doubt, choose the ER

If you're not sure whether your symptoms are an emergency, choose the ER. We'd rather rule out something serious than have you wait at home with something dangerous.

How to use both well

Urgent care for routine same-day issues. ER for anything that feels serious, sudden, severe, or involves a chronic condition (heart disease, diabetes, immunocompromise). Primary care for everything else.
